PENTSIGN - Cacophonous March Of The Darkness
While skimming the Net to find some background information on this helluva obscure Russian outfit I came across the following nugget of promotional cheese: “A debut album of the band! Sinister, brutal and unpredictable Black/Death that has absorbed only best and right traditions! High quality sound and dynamic of Death Metal! Speed manners and fury of Black Metal.” Best and right traditions? Speed manners? Really? Gotta love that kind of fanboy zeal. Anyway, is any of this actually indicative of the music contained in “Cacophonous March Of The Dark”. Uh, yes. Unfortunately this doesn’t mean that any of this actually sounds any good though…
Abandoning any whiff of subtlety and/or finesse these Russians bulldoze straight ahead with their crude mix of Death and Black Metal, with this approach adhered to in rigid fashion throughout the album’s duration. It’s certainly heavy and in the “right tradition” if you find bands like old SEANCE, UNANIMATED and SACRAMENTUM the absolute pinnacle of extreme Metal excellence, that is. The “speed manners” of course mean that a hefty dose of primal Thrash is also present. I’ll give them credit for striking a decent balance between the American school of crunchy heaviness (“Insanity”) and the more sinister atmospherics of the aforementioned early Swedish Black/Death bands (“Beyond”), but when it all comes down to it this album simply doesn’t have any real standout moments. Wave upon wave of Blackened Death a good album does not make. A “brutal” one perhaps, but not a good one. Oh, and the material isn’t unpredictable at all; after a few songs the riff patterns are easily telegraphed.
Like TALES OF DARKNORD these guys are pretty much your average Russian Death/Black band. BELPHEGOR traverses the same musical path, yes, but where their music is delivered with both maniacal intensity as well as a healthy bit of tongue-in-cheek PENTSIGN’s album does little to dispel any notion that they aren’t merely going through the motions. Now that’s definitely not a right tradition in this reviewer’s book.

Desde las orillas del rio Kola, concretamente de la ciudad de Murmansk, situada en la region de Laponia y muy cercana a la frontera tanto de Noruega como de Finlandia, nos llega el primer trabajo de Pentsign, grupo de reciente formacion que sin ninguna demo ni nada parecido de por medio, nos trae esta primera muestra musical de un death/black metal con un sonido bastante fresco, pero que a primeras le falta un poco de garra y un poco de originalidad… pero pasemos a detallarlo mas brevemente.
Los componentes del grupo ya no son nuevos en el “negocio”, sino que uno de sus componentes formo parte de Nav’ – que desde aqui recomiendo encarecidamente que los seguidores del black les pegue una escucha a su primer disco si no lo cataron – y tambien hay miembros de una banda llamada Dismember Life Body de la cual no sabia su existencia, por lo que el liston va subiendo un poco mas, ya que ahora la exculpacion de que “son novatos” no sirve de mucho. Para intentar que os hagais una idea del concepto musical, seria algo asi como mezclar parte de los Marduk de la epoca del World Funeral con baterias rapidas y con medios tiempos, mezclada con la parte mas death metal de la primera epoca de Belphegor. Hacen muy buen trabajo en lo referente a las melodias de guitarra, y la voz juega un papel muy importante, casi siempre en un primer plano dominante, donde se observa la faceta mas death, con voces tanto graves y la mitica voz aguda doblandola. Una de las canciones que mas me ha llamado en un principio desde la primera escucha ha sido el segundo corte, “Where Night…”, donde con un gran primer riff al mas puro estilo del death metal mas melodico, da paso ya una parte de puro black metal. Se ve que tienen ideas muy interesantes, pero les pierde que muchas de esas melodias de guitarra son muy caracteristicas y al alcance de cualquier grupo, ese seria el gran aspecto a mejorar proximamente, para asi intentar conseguir destacar dentro de este mundillo. Incluso en algunos momentos se puede vislumbrar cierto parecido a Taake, con esos riffs epicos que tanto les caracteriza.
En todo momento la produccion es bastante aceptable, con muy buen sonido que acompanara a lo largo de todo el disco, donde destacaria el buen tratamiento al sonido de guitarra, cuidado hasta el minimo detalle, colocando guitarras pesadas donde tienen que estar, pero sin abusar de ello, aunque falle un poquito esa “contundencia”. Pero como siempre, el bajo, ese gran olvidado, se puede apreciar claramente en ocasiones muy concretas del disco, pasando desapercibido la gran mayoria de las veces, intuyendose solamente. Para ir concluyendo, decir que es buen disco, entretenido, variado, pero por desgracia les falta todavia ese toque personal que hoy en dia tanto se cotiza. Segun he podido intuir en la poca informacion que habia en Internet y que no estuviese en ruso, creo que estan preparando nuevo disco, habra que catarlo.
